A wonderful first year!

This week brings me to my 1st anniversary of joining the Bright Group and starting my professional illustration career. Incidently I also graduated on the 8th September last year! It's crazy to think how fast the time has flown by, but I'm grateful and proud to be part of the Bright family and to have been offered some really wonderful opportunities in the last year.

This year I've worked along side brilliant book designers from around the world on some exciting and fun filled products ranging from baby books, activity books, educational readers, song books, poetry books, treasuries and even mural painting! Every project is new and fresh. Illustrating always manages to keep me on my toes. This is certainly a job that will never get boring! One of my favourite aspects is being able to read the stories and bring them to life for the talented authors.

You may be reading this as an Illustrator yourself, or perhaps as an Author, or maybe neither! But, if you are reading this and hoping to one day become an Illustrator of children's literature, the snippet of advice I offer from my first year is that to persue this career can be a rocky path, It's certainly not an easy job (Although sitting in your PJ's painting cats may sound delightful!) You have to take the good with the bad and it can be a slow start. Agencies are a great way to get your work out there and in front of some reputable clients, but they can only take you so far, you have to keep on top of your portfolio and not be afraid to let go of old artwork and take criticism. And building a portfolio which is Agency ready can take time, patience and a will to allow your work to evolve.

If you are an aspiring illustrator and want to know more about why I chose this as my career or tips I may be able to offer you if you're just getting started, don't hesitate to drop me a message through my contact page!

I'm excited to discover what the coming year has to bring! I wish you all the best in your endeavours too!
